A Thoughtful Retreat Location Just Outside Portland

I had the opportunity to spend some time at Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, Washington while exploring potential retreat locations in the Pacific Northwest.

The lodge has a warm, rustic feel that immediately makes the space relaxed and welcoming.

I was there on a Wednesday evening and was surprised by how lively the lobby felt mid-week. It had the kind of energy I always hope for when hosting retreats — a place where people naturally gather, talk, and spend time together outside of the retreat agenda.

I love building in time for informal connection before dinner when hosting retreats. A happy hour with wine, light hors d’oeuvres, and music is often where some of the best conversations and connections happen. I was impressed with how many spaces throughout the lodge allow guests to relax, connect, and ease into the evening together.

The lodge offers several amenities that work well for multi-day retreats, including a fitness center, pool, hot tub, sauna, and an on-site restaurant. I also appreciated how dog-friendly the property is. For guests who enjoy traveling with their dogs, the lodge is very accommodating and offers dog-friendly rooms.

Heathman Lodge feels tucked away while still being incredibly easy to access. It sits just outside Portland with quick freeway access, making travel simple for guests flying in.

It’s about 15 minutes from the Vancouver waterfront. The waterfront has become a great destination with restaurants, coffee shops, and wine tasting rooms. I like giving retreat guests a change of scenery, and the waterfront would be a perfect place for a group dinner or evening out.

Portland is also just across the river for anyone wanting to extend their stay. The city is full of incredible restaurants and neighborhoods to explore. I had to slip in and visit two of my favorite Portland spots — Screen Door for breakfast and Southpark Seafood, both always worth the stop.

Heathman Lodge feels like the kind of place where people can slow down, connect, and step away from the pace of everyday work. For leadership retreats, spaces like this create the environment for thoughtful conversations, new ideas, and the kind of connection that often continues long after the retreat ends.
